Congratulations Science Fair
Participants!
We are VERY proud of the good work you all did on your science fair projects. You showed understanding, planning, hard work, and attention to detail in creating them. Good luck to all the Jefferson winners at the citywide science fair competition too!

Interesting Science Facts:

Goldfish kept in a dark room turn much paler; if it were not for the color in the food in their diet, they would turn completely white.

Fingernails grow four times faster than toenails.

Newsweek reported that the songs of humpback whales can change dramatically from year to year, yet each whale in an oceanwide population always sings the same song as the others.

Past Interesting Science Facts:

About 80% of all life on earth is found in the oceans. Even though the oceans contain 99% of the living space on Earth, less than 10% of that space has been explored by humans.

The oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and contain 97% of the Earth's water.

Ocean water is 96.5% oxygen and hydrogen and 3.5% salts and other dissolved elements. Of course, water is made from hydrogen and oxygen, and you know its scientific formula:
H2O

Did you know that jellyfish (which some people call "jellies" since they are not really fish) started living on Earth about 500,000,000 (500 million) years ago? Dinosaurs lived about 150,000,000 (150 million years) ago. Not only were jellies here BEFORE the dinosaurs, jellies still are here and can be seen in our salt water oceans and seas- even in Long Island Sound! I'll bet you haven't seen any dinosaurs around lately!

Did you know that the oceans cover about 140 million square miles and that the deepest part of our oceans is in the western part of the Pacific where the water is 36,198 feet deep?
